Nice post whirlwind dreamer! This was filmed in the town I live in on the Kona Coast of the Big Island. If I'm not mistaken I believe the whole band became certified divers over here. I wish the guy had put a different song than "Ship Of Fools" as background music on it though. There was nothing foolish about Jerry's chosen recreational hobby. I believe it may have prolonged his life. He loved to vacation here and scuba dive, as does Bobby Weir.

Jerry did an Earth Day gig here in 1990 as a benefit to help save the coral reefs. Incredibly Jerry even took the time to go in front of the County Council and speak out as a "good citizen" (his words) for the cause. No small thing coming from a band that was famously "apolitical" There used to be some YouTube footage of him in front of the Hawaii County Council but I can't seem to find it anymore.

Looking at them diving here reminds me of the day Jerry died. Jefferson Starship was playing a show in Kona the day everybody heard the news. Paul Kantner, Jerry's old friend from the Jefferson Airplane/Starship led a memorial service at one of Jerry's favorite dive spots and a flaming wreath was laid on the water there to guide Jerry's spirit home.

I like to think Jerry found his way home.

Nice story and post, and I think you may be right with the scuba diving helping Jerry back into the land of the living. I believe he started going in 88-89 right? Anyway check out the difference in weight and fitness in photos and video between fall of 88 and summer of 89 {photo guys} and it's hard for me to see Jerry doing the gym thing too enthusiastically.
Besides there's nothing quite as trippy cool as a coral reef in all it's splendor to inspire one's creativity.
